Pay As You Go (sometimes known as Prepay, Pay As You Like or Pay As You Use) was originally set up as a means of allowing those who were not eligible to sign up to a mobile phone contract, a way of owning they're own handset. Rather then pay a certain amount of line rental and in return receiving a quota of calls and texts, Pay As You Go allows it's users to pre-pay for the calls they want to make.

Up until recently Pay As You Go was becoming more and more expensive due to the rising costs of the latest handsets after network operators stopped subsidising the costs of the handsets, but recently a new generation of reasonably priced handsets aimed at users who may have previously been unable to get a normal contract mobile, due to a bad credit history or their age. It is now possible to own a respectable Pay As You Go mobile for under £10!

In the long run contract mobiles offer the best value for money if your a frequent user of your handset so a Pay As You Go mobile is only really worth it if you are under 18 years old, have a bad credit history, or intend to just use your phone occasionally or in emergencies. Charges are usually higher for calls and texts than with a contract but you also don't have to pay any line rental!
